Cedar Essential Oil – DIY wardrobe magic, naturally!
I want to share one of my favourite little tricks from the Nature Body workshop- keeping clothes safe from pesky moths using cedar essential oil. It's simple, natural, and smells absolutely divine.
We're lucky to have access to a variety of large essential oils in our workshop, and cedarwood is one I reach for often. I have two small blocks of cedarwood tucked away in my wardrobe. Every six months or so, I top them up with several drops of cedarwood essential oil — though I have to admit, last time I got a little carried away and used quite a lot! (Yes, I went a little overboard...)
Cedar has long been used as a natural moth deterrent. The aroma is strong enough to keep moths away but gentle and grounding for us humans. Unlike chemical alternatives, cedar essential oil works without harsh smells or residues, and leaves your wardrobe with a subtle, comforting woody fragrance.
Here's how I use it:
- Take small cedarwood blocks or chips and place them in your wardrobe or drawers.
- Add a few drops of cedarwood essential oil to the blocks every six months or as needed.
- Enjoy your clothes smelling fresh, natural, and protected!
I love the warm, woody scent - it's perfect for naturally freshening a room, and it's no wonder cedarwood is often used as a base note in perfumes and colognes.
Cedarwood isn't just great for your wardrobe — it has some lovely benefits for you, too:
- Relaxation & Calming: The warm, woody aroma has a grounding effect that helps soothe the mind, ease nervous tension, and gently melt away stress.
- Enhanced Focus: A sniff of cedarwood can help sharpen your mind, improving clarity, concentration, and focus when you need it most.
It's a little ritual I love as it not only keeps my clothes safe from moth holes, but also fills my home with a beautiful, natural aroma. For anyone looking for a chemical-free, cost effective way to care for your wardrobe, cedarwood essential oil is a wonderfully simple and fragrant choice.
We'd love to hear if you've tried cedar as a natural moth deterrent — or if you have any other favourite natural ways to care for your clothes or home!
